Week 6 Wrap Up

Welcome back! This week we began our second novel The Thing About Georgie. We are exploring new themes and vocabulary and discussing ways we can treat others who are different than we are with respect and kindness. We have done a lot of fun activities in class to help us have perspective on our main character such as comparing our “normal” heights to Georgie’s and even trying something as simple as reaching our own ears! In our journals we are writing about accepting others differences and about the characters we are meeting in our first few chapters. In Math we continued practicing double digit addition with regrouping and introduced double digit subtraction with regrouping. We are also learning our 5 x tables this week. In Social Studies we explored our Scholastic News magazine and learned about the rover exploring Mars. We watched an amazing video on Discovery Streaming about this really cool planet! Then, we designed our own robots and gave them our own creative names inspired by what we learned. We are continuing to work in our handwriting books and using our spelling words in our reading and writing activities

A look ahead...

Next week, we will continue using our novel by exploring themes about friendship and bullying and focusing on the characters as they develop. In Language Arts we will be introducing essay writing and preparing for our first 3 paragraph essay. Our spelling words will be words from our reading in addition to leveled words from our series and math terms. We will continue to use our new cursive skills and add entries in our journals with topics about our reading and feelings about our story. In Math we will be reviewing chapter 2 and 3 and practicing these skills. We will be taking our test on Tuesday. We will also be studying our 9 times tables. In Social Studies we will begin Chapter 3 by exploring natural resources and how we can keep our environment healthy. Thank you all for being so diligent in signing your children’s reading log. I understand that that it is a daily event and can be seen as a burden, however helping our children understand the importance of reading on a daily basis is something that will stay with them for a life time.

Here we are in Art class making beautiful fall leaves

Our new playground is AMAZING! We love recess!

In Social Studies we created our very own roving robots!

Practicing math facts on the Smartboard is so fun!
Here are some of the activities we did for our novel. We measured ourselves, tried to reach our ears, and worked hard in our reading response notebooks making predictions and per-reading observations.

Here are our reading bulletin boards for our read-a-thon and our first novel project
